The H 19 is a product of Opticon. The product is a PDA-like device containing Windows Mobile 6, featuring a numeric keyboard and touch screen. The product exists in 2 variants. The A version contains a 1D laser scan engine, whereas the B version contains a 2D CCD scan engine. Both versions contain a GSM/GPRS/EDGE unit (Siemens MC75) inside. Additionally, a GPS receiver is embedded as well.

General configuration of the device can be found at the Windows Mobile Configuration page.

Where can the software version be found on this device?

Please go to Start > Settings > System > Device Info > Software > ROM Version.

Newest OS version available

The most up to date version available are REL_PEONY_090725 and To determine which OS version is needed, check the software version of the device.

How do I soft-reset the device?

Use the stylus to press the button behind the hole at the left side of the device.

How do I hard reset the device?

First soft-reset the device. Then press'n'hold the power button for 3 seconds.

A blue screen will show. Follow-up the instructions on the screen. Depending of the choice, the re-alignment needs to be done.

I get bugged by the "backup battery low" message all the time!

Make sure the OS version should be at least REL_PEONY_080411.

If that is the case, the backup battery is most likely broken. Please send the H 19 in for repair via the standard RMA procedure.

Please note that this will never result in loss of data or settings when the main battery is removed for any amount of time.

What is the battery lifetime of the device?

Talking time: 4 hours
Standby time: 150 hours

What are the environmental specs of the H19?

Operating Temperatures:

Non charging: -10 to +50 degree C (20 to 80 % RH)
Charging: +5 to 40 degree C (20 to 80 % RH)

Storage Temperatures:

With Battery: -20 to +60 degree C (85 % RH max)
Without Battery: -20 to +60 degree C (90 % RH max)

Which GPS chipset is embedded in the device?

There is an SiRF Star III chipset inside with SBAS support (WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS). This supports the "NMEA 0183" as well as the SiRF binary protocol. The NMEA protocol runs on COM4 at 57600 baud.

The H19 does not support Assisted GPS (A-GPS)

To test the GPS functionality, you can download a demo application. This demo application also has a user manual which shows you how to use it.

Another demo application is able to show the development mode as well.

Please note: The baudrate can be changed by the demo application to 4800 baud, instead of 57600 baud.

In order to be able to handle GPS data in your own application, please go to the dedicated Windows Mobile Development page.

What is the MTBF of the device?

The MTBF is 183,041 hours, excluding the LCM.

Application and development related

I have troubles connecting the device to my PC.

If you are using Windows 7 please go to "Start > Settings > Connections (tab) > USB To PC" and disable the "Advanced network functionality". Now the scanner should be able to connect to a Windows 7 PC using Windows Mobile Device Center.

These problems may also be caused by ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center.

The "USB to PC" tool seems to hang!

If changing this property of the H19, it is possible that you will only see an hourglass spinning and spinning after you tap OK.
In that case, you should power off the H19 by pressing the power button for 3 seconds, and answering the question. If the device is turned off, turn it ON again, and check if the property is changed.
An alternative way to do this, is soft reset the device.

I cannot install an application! The device won’t let me...

Please change the registry keys

  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000101a] to 1 (questions whether to run or not)
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\00001001] to 1
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\00001005] to 40
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\00001017] to 144

Now, perform a soft-reset.
Now the OS will ask if you want to install the application or not (first key), and run “unsave” applications.

NOTE: This solution is not verified yet!!!

I cannot run my Visual Studio 2005 application using the SDK on the H19; It says "Class not registered"

This is a known issue. Please check this on our H 16 - H 19 SDK page.

I want to configure the WLAN regulatory from source!

You can do this by using the following source:

    // In the initial part, get country code from registry
    //dwDomainValue is the country code which user selected last time.
    //None = 0
    //USA =16
    HRESULT Regulatory::GetFromRegistry()
        HKEY hKey;
        DWORD dwSize;
        DWORD dwType = REG_DWORD;
        HRESULT hRes;
        hRes = RegOpenKeyExW(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,L"Comm\\SWLD246L1\\Parms",0,KEY_ALL_ACCESS,&hKey);
        if (hRes == ERROR_SUCCESS)
            dwSize = sizeof(DWORD);
        return hRes;
    // When user presses "Save", set the country code and channel to the registry
    //dwNewDomainValue is the country code which user selected from application
    //None = 0
    //USA_FCC =16
    HRESULT Regulatory::SetToRegistry()
        HKEY hKey;
        DWORD dwDisp,dwValue = 153;
        HRESULT hRes;
        RegCreateKeyExW(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, L"Comm\\SWLD246L1\\Parms", 0, NULL, 0, KEY_ALL_ACCESS, NULL, &hKey, &dwDisp);
        //Save country code
        //Save channel
        if(dwNewDomainValue == None)
            dwNewChannelDomainValue = 0;
        else if(dwNewDomainValue == USA_FCC)
            dwNewChannelDomainValue = 2047;
        else if(dwNewDomainValue == Europe_ETSI)
            dwNewChannelDomainValue = 8191;
        else if(dwNewDomainValue == France)
            dwNewChannelDomainValue = 7680;
        else if(dwNewDomainValue == Spain)
            dwNewChannelDomainValue = 1536;
        else if(dwNewDomainValue == Japan_MKK)
            dwNewChannelDomainValue = 16383;
        DWORD dwType = REG_DWORD, dwSize = sizeof(DWORD);
        hRes = RegCreateKeyExW(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, L"SOFTWARE\\Samsung", 0, NULL, 0, KEY_ALL_ACCESS, NULL, &hKey, &dwDisp);
        return hRes;

This code has been tested with OS images up to and including REL_PEONY_080411.
Please note that the device will have to be soft reset after setting the regulatory.

Barcodes scanned by my device using the keyboard hook appear slowly in Word

When using the keyboard hook, every word that is typed, is entered in a file to be able to auto-complete a word if some characters are typed in the future. The more barcodes are scanned, the more entries are in the file, and the longer the searching takes.

You can change this setting in Start > Settings > Input > tab "Word Completion" and then disable the "Suggest words when entering text".

I cannot find Terminal Server Client or Remote Desktop on my device!

This is true. Windows Mobile 6.0 does not contain Terminal Service Client or Remote Desktop by default anymore. This includes the Professional edition (which is installed at the H19) as well as the Classic and the Standard edition.

There are a number of 3rd party applications on the Internet, which can work on Windows Mobile 6.
A freeware application can be found when searching for "WM6 RDP Finster" in your preferred searchengine.

I want to use Secure http from my own application

When trying to access web content through secure HTTP, it is needed to check the certificate validation. It is possible to implement a custom certificate validation in order to always accept the validity of a certain certificate.

Below is MSDN reference for:

1. Implementing custom certificate validation

2. Setting your custom certificate policy to ServicePointManager

How can I sign my own application for H19 with a CA certificate?

You can use any of the well known companies to get a certificate for code signing, like Verisign or Thawte. Alternatively (if you have an H19N, that has SN > 200000) you can get in contact with our support department and get a signing certificate from Opticon.

I want to change the name of the SD card slot, is it possible?

You can change the name of the SD card slot by editing the following registry key:

After this edit a reboot is needed.
