Introduction

When you connect a HID device for the first time, MacOS-X will try to determine what kind of keyboard layout is used. Since the reader does not have keys, you will have to read the appropriate bar code labels. And to avoid confusion, the bar code reader need to be set up differently during this "keyboard identification" process.

Setup

The sample labels used below are Code128. To have the identification process work correctly, the default suffix of Code128 needs to be disabled. Please read the following setup sheet to do this.

Press key right of left shift

The first step in the identification process, MacOS-X asks you to press the key next to the left Shift.

On a US-International keyboard, this is the lower case 'z'.

Press key left of right shift

The next step in the identification process, you are asked to press the key next right shift.

Done

The identification process is now almost done. You get presented a list of possible keyboards you can have. From this list choose the ANSI keyboard.

You're done here. Now the only thing left to do is set the reader back to USB defaults.
